Abstracts of the 2008
Conference
The Australasian Primate Society held their 2008 conference at the South
Australian Museum on October 4 & 5.
Overall the conference was successful and inspiring. Presentations were
held on the Saturday of which were varied and very interesting. These
included presentations about Great Apes, Lemurs, Macaques, Proboscis
monkeys, and Nutrition. There was a range of speakers, from students to
expert primatologists.
Please note that although Tony Gilding was not able to make the
conference, the time allotted to his talk was dedicated to discussing
oil palm by all participants. Dr Carla Litchfield has provided some
links which have been included at the end of this update for your
perusal.
After a very enlightening day and lengthy Annual General Meeting
(outcomes below) a large group from the conference had a dinner together
on Saturday night.
On Sunday transport was provided for participants to head out to Monarto
Zoo. We enjoyed a lovely day touring the large zoo and the recently
constructed chimpanzee enclosure. We enjoyed a brief meet and greet with
Jane Goodall and got the great pleasure of hearing her inspiring speak
to open the new enclosure. After a lovely picnic lunch we headed back to
the Adelaide Zoo for a quick primate tour. It was a beautiful day filled
with fun and inspiring people and primates.
Some photos should be available on the web site soon.
Outcomes from the Annual General Meeting:
* Due to lack of resources and submissions, the annual journal will be
deferred until further discussions at the next AGM 2009. There will be
an online newsletter available March - April 2009 including details
about the next conference and AGM.
Any other suggestions or offers of help would be welcomed at this time.
* Elissa Pearson will be the editor of this newsletter. We really
appreciate Elissa for taking this on and she will be requesting
submissions for the newsletter via email in January 2009.
If you have any ideas or information to submit for the newsletter please
do pass this information on to
Elissa, because without submissions, we have no newsletter to print.
* It is proposed that future journal editions will only be available
online via a PDF through the web site.
* In view of these proposed changes, membership fees will be reviewed at
the next AGM. Unfortunately there was not a quorum to make a decision on
this suggestion at this AGM.
Therefore all executive and sate representative positions still stand as
they were.
* A date and conference host for 2009 is still to be decided, so please
regularly check the web site for updates. If there are any volunteers to
host the conference please contact
Nicole Wilson:
